The Brainerd Lakes Area is one of the best multispecies, freshwater fisheries in the United States. You will find a variety of species abundant here – ranging from bass to muskie, but the region is best known for its walleye fishing. Throughout the year, anglers enjoy great fishing with more than 500 diverse lakes in central Minnesota, including the ever popular Gull Lake Chain of Lakes, the Whitefish Chain of Lakes and Lake Mille Lacs. You will find many expert fishing guides in the region as well as bait shops where you can find all that you need to ensure a successful fishing trip. The Brainerd Lakes Area also is known for its fishing tournaments, most notably, the Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza, which attracts 10,000 people to Brainerd every January. Brainerd is home to many legendary fishing professionals, including Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame inductees Al and Ron Lindner, Gary Roach, and Babe Winkelman.
Photo Cutline: Minnesota Wild left winger Jason Zucker caught this northern pike Tuesday night, June 26, 2012, on Gull Lake during a fishing event hosted by Leisure Outdoor Adventures. Zucker’s pike helped him earn top honors against fellow Wild defenseman Nate Prosser. Zucker, Prosser, and Wild radio analyst Tom Reid fished in Brainerd as part of the Minnesota Wild Road Tour. A photo album of the fishing tournament can be found on Facebook in the Explore Brainerd Lakes Minnesota Wild Brainerd Fishing Contest album.
