The Brainerd Lakes Area landmark trail is the Paul Bunyan State Trail, which runs more than 100 miles from the trailhead in Baxter to Bemidji. You can access the trail, and find parking areas, in multiple locations throughout the Brainerd Lakes Area. Communities along the trail offer great opportunities to shop, have a meal, make a repair, buy or rent equipment, or even stay the night. In the Cuyuna Lakes region, you will find the newly opened Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Biking Trails as well as the paved Cuyuna Lakes State Trail.
The mountain biking trails offer 30 trails of varying difficulty for the beginning rider to the advanced mountain biker. In all, there are 25 miles of single-track, purpose-built trails spread out across 800 acres in an artist’s palette of colors ranging from the dark maroon soil to the blue-green waters, with amazing vistas across the forested recreation area and mine pit lakes. The Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway covers more than 50 miles in and near the Whitefish Chain of Lakes through several communities, including Crosslake and Pequot Lakes. Extensive trail systems can be found in East Gull Lake as well. The Brainerd Lakes Area, not only known as a fishing and golfing destination, is now recognized as a premiere Minnesota biking destination because of the number and variety of trail systems and because of its bicycle friendly communities.
