5K for Mental Health Awareness

Saturday, May 9, 2020 (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (CDT)

Description

Our 1st 5K for Mental Health Awareness will be a Central Lakes College event on May 9, 2020 at 9:00 am. This event will consist of a 5K (3.1 mile) chipped race or walk and a 1 mile dedication walk (for those that wish to support mental health awareness but are not runners).

The purpose of this event is to raise awareness about mental health, to reduce the stigma associated with mental health diagnosis and to raise funds to support students to persist in college. We also wish to encourage healthy coping skills (exercising) that are scientifically proven to increase mental health functioning and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.  For college students in particular, stress often contributes to the development of certain psychological disorders.

At CLC, one particular stressor students face is food insecurity.  Slightly less than 50% of CLC students are food insecure. This means that they do not have a steady food income. These students are not able to focus as well in class with a hungry stomach.  We hope to reduce this stressor that many of our college students face.  Therefore, a portion of the proceeds (above cost) will go to the CLC Food Shelf to alleviate the stressor of food insecurity.
